Katrine Galea - March 2025

Katrine Galea is a London-based artist working primarily with printmaking. Her practice explores material, texture, and repetition, often grounded in a close engagement with landscape and process. She stayed at House of Hulda in March 2025.

Galea’s work is rooted in a physical relationship to making, working through prints as a way of testing, refining, and reworking visual ideas over time. Her approach often balances structure with openness, allowing experimentation to guide the outcome rather than working toward a fixed result.

Arriving from London, the residency marked a clear shift in pace. “I was at a point where I needed to reconnect with my work and re-center myself.” With fewer external demands, she established a daily rhythm focused on printmaking, using the time to both continue and expand her practice.

The change in environment fed directly into how she worked. She describes the landscape as a backdrop, but also as something she actively engaged with through her process. “I experimented with my practice, and found new ways of engaging with the landscape through my work.”
Alongside time in the studio, she spent long periods walking and driving across the island, where observation and stillness became part of the same cycle as making.

“It was both shocking and healing to realize how much I needed this slower, intentional pace.”

The residency allowed her to sustain a balance that is often difficult to maintain in a city - consistent studio time alongside space to think. That shift wasn’t just productive, but necessary.

Since her stay at House of Hulda, Galea continues to develop her print-based work, carrying forward the methods and pace she re-established during the residency.
