Johanne Nyborg - November 2025
Johanne Nyborg (b. 1994) is a Norwegian photographer, visual artist, and writer. Working across image and text, her practice often explores memory, place, and personal narrative. She stayed at House of Hulda in November 2025.
Nyborg’s work moves between disciplines, with writing playing an increasingly central role. Her projects often develop over long periods, shaped by lived experience and a close attention to landscape, particularly connections to the Norwegian west coast where she is from.
Coming from a busy freelance life with multiple parallel projects, the residency offered something she rarely has access to: uninterrupted time. “House of Hulda gave me the necessary space to think long, unbroken thoughts.” With fewer demands and distractions, she was able to focus fully on one thing.
Her goal for the stay was clear—to complete a full first draft of a book she had been working on for several years. Over the course of two weeks, she made significant progress, working during the day and allowing ideas to settle and reorganise during long walks along the sea. “It was as if the text organised itself in my subconscious.”
Alongside writing, she returned to other parts of her practice that had been set aside. She filmed with an old camcorder, drew in the evenings, and played guitar—activities she hadn’t given time to in years. These gestures weren’t separate from the work, but part of the same process of slowing down and reconnecting.
“The place became a quiet capsule where I could allow myself to soften.”
The experience also carried a sense of familiarity. The landscape reminded her of her home region in Sogn & Fjordane, creating a connection that felt both personal and grounding.
“I’m sure the book wouldn’t have been the same without these weeks in the north.”
Since her stay, Nyborg continues to develop the writing project initiated during the residency, with House of Hulda remaining a defining part of its formation.
