Jo Delafons - October 2025
Jo Delafons is a UK-based mixed media sculptor whose work explores material, balance, and the fragile relationship between people and the natural world. Working with layered and often found materials, her practice reflects an ongoing engagement with landscape and the traces it leaves behind. She stayed at House of Hulda in October 2025.
Delafons’ work is shaped through accumulation and response, building sculptural forms that feel both delicate and grounded. Her pieces often carry a sense of tension and balance, reflecting an emotional and physical connection to place.
Arriving at House of Hulda, that connection was immediate. “We literally ran around at first sight like kittens—exclaiming at the incredible views from every window.” The experience began with a heightened awareness of the surroundings, where looking, moving, and reacting became part of her process.
Time on the island was spent exploring, with particular attention to light and shifting conditions. “We have been so lucky with a sunny day and glowing amber lights towards end of day.” These moments, along with witnessing the northern lights, fed into her way of working, where experience is gathered first and later translated into material form.
“Had the most magical day exploring and saw the northern lights.”
Rather than producing resolved work during the residency, Delafons’ time at Hulda functioned as a period of collecting visual, sensory, and emotional references that continue to inform her sculptural language.
“I have absolutely loved being here and it will be fundamental to my work.”
Since her residency, the experience remains embedded in her practice, informing how she approaches material, balance, and her ongoing exploration of landscape through sculpture.
