Amy Dury - July 2025

Amy Dury is a UK-based painter whose work explores colour, landscape, and atmosphere through an intuitive and expressive approach. Working across different scales, her practice often shifts between small studies and larger, more immersive paintings. She stayed at House of Hulda in July 2025.

Dury’s work is rooted in observation but driven by feeling, responding quickly to environment, light, and movement. Her process allows for flexibility, often moving between formats and surfaces as ideas develop.

During her residency, this adaptability became central to how she worked. She moved between painting small at the table in the evenings and working on larger pieces outside during the day. The setting allowed her to test ideas freely, without interruption. “I was able to experiment with some ideas painting small at the table in the evenings and larger on the balcony in the daytime.”

It was also her first time spending an extended period completely alone in such a remote place. “It was the first time that I was on my own for a whole week, in a place so remote you don’t even get people walking past your door.” That isolation created both focus and a heightened awareness of the surroundings.

The landscape became part of the daily rhythm..quick access to beaches, long walks, and encounters with wildlife. “Seeing eagles and moose, and orcas in the sea.” These experiences fed into her work as a sense of movement and atmosphere rather than direct depiction.

“This was the perfect retreat. I felt safe and welcomed and encouraged.”

Following her residency, Dury brought a selection of works developed during her time at House of Hulda to New York, where they were exhibited at Tambaran Gallery, marking an early continuation of the ideas explored during her stay.
