CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Residences Winter 2027

House of Hulda is partnering with Rise Art for the second time around to launch a programme of four partly funded artist residencies in Andøya, Norway.

At a moment when arts funding continues to contract globally, limiting opportunities for sustained creative development, this collaboration is grounded in a shared commitment to supporting artists at pivotal stages in their careers.

Central to the programme is the belief that time, space and context are essential to artistic development. The residency offers artists the opportunity to step away from their regular working environments and dedicate sustained time to their practice, reflecting a shared investment in meaningful forms of support that extend beyond short-term visibility.

Open to both emerging and established practitioners, the programme seeks to foreground diverse voices and practices deserving of wider attention. Set against the remote Arctic landscape of Andøya, participating artists will have the opportunity to engage deeply with a setting defined by space, clarity and isolation.

Open Call

We invite applications from artists who:

  • Are not currently represented by a gallery

  • Are willing to consign work created during or following the residency for sale with Rise Art, and to participate in storytelling and promotional activity around the residency, both online and offline

  • Are available to undertake a two-week residency during one of the following periods in 2027:

    • 10–24 January

    • 24 January–7 February

    • 7–21 February

    • 21 February–7 March

House of Hulda is a registered non-profit organisation providing artists with much-needed space and time to develop their practice and find inspiration. All proceeds go towards the upkeep, development and growth of the home and studio space in the small village of Stave, Andøya.

Rise Art shines a light on today’s most dynamic and culturally significant artists, collaborating directly with a curated roster of emerging, mid-career and established creatives worldwide.

Setting
Set within the Arctic landscape, the residency offers a rare opportunity to experience Andøya’s shifting seasons and their distinct atmospheres.

The House
The house comprises a main floor with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and open-plan living and dining area. On the ground floor, there is an additional guest bedroom alongside a dedicated workshop space. Residents have full access to the entire property.
While the residency encourages focused engagement with both practice and environment, artists are welcome to host a partner or guest for part of their stay if preferred.

Funding & Costs
The residency is partly funded. Accommodation at House of Hulda is provided free of charge for the full two-week residency.

Each selected artist will receive £350 towards travel costs.

Artists should be aware that the travel contribution may not cover the full cost of travelling to and from Andøya. Return flights from European cities can frequently exceed £350, and residents are responsible for covering any difference between the travel contribution and their final travel costs.

As part of the residency, each artist is asked to leave one artwork of their choice at House of Hulda, contributing to the organisation’s growing permanent collection.
