Rose Ras - May 2026

Rose Ras (b. 2001) is a Haitian-born artist based in Paris and a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Her paintings explore organic forms, transformation, and the physical forces that shape landscapes and living matter. Working with layered surfaces and mixed media, she creates works that evoke roots, vegetation, geological formations, and states of growth and decay.

Nature plays a central role in Ras's practice. Her paintings often emerge through processes of accumulation, excavation, and reinvention, where organic structures become both subject and material. Rather than depicting landscapes directly, she creates environments that feel alive—shifting between observation, memory, and imagination.

Rose stayed at House of Hulda in May 2026 alongside fellow artist Louis Lanne. In their application, they described the residency as an opportunity to reconnect with a kind of idleness and reflection that is increasingly difficult to find within the pace of contemporary life. With nature already central to both of their practices, the landscapes and biodiversity of Andøya were a significant reason for applying.

During her stay, Ras embraced a slower rhythm, balancing studio time with long walks and periods of rest. "The house is the perfect setting to refocus on your creativity, but also to take your time, time to think, rest, get bored, and walk." Rather than working towards a fixed outcome, the residency offered space for ideas to develop gradually through observation and attention.

The experience reflected something already present within her work: a fascination with natural processes that unfold in their own time. Surrounded by the changing landscape of Andøya, she found an environment that encouraged the same patience and openness she brings to painting.

"House of Hulda is certainly one of the most peaceful places I have ever been."

The house itself became part of that experience, a place that supported both concentration and rest, providing everything needed to work while allowing time for reflection. By the end of her stay, it was not only the studio that remained with her, but the wider landscape and atmosphere of the island.

"I will never forget the landscapes of Norway, Stave, and of course, the House of Hulda."

Since her residency, Ras continues to develop her practice, carrying forward the observations, rhythms, and sense of stillness she found during her time on Andøya.
